These Avocado Waffles are made using creamy mashed avocado instead of butter or oil, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture with a slightly crisp exterior. They are studded with dark chocolate chips for an indulgent touch of decadence.
In all my waffle recipes, I aim for the ideal combination of a crisp outer layer and a light, airy interior. Achieving that crispness without traditional fats like butter or coconut oil proved challenging.
To overcome this, I turned to the healthy fats in avocado to add the ideal richness and moisture to the waffles. By substituting mashed avocado for the butter in blueberry waffles recipe, the result was absolutely perfect.

Why you'll love this?
- No butter or oil
- Light and fluffy texture
- Studded with dark chocolate chips
- Freezer friendly
Ingredients
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.
- Avocado - As for the avocado dinner rolls, select a perfectly ripe avocado for a creamy, lump-free texture when mashed.
- Buttermilk - It’s a crucial ingredient for making exceptional avocado waffles. It imparts a subtle tanginess and reacts with baking soda to create a wonderfully fluffy texture.
- Eggs - Eggs provide much needed structure and binding.
- Flour - You'll need two cups of all-purpose flour. Before measuring, gently stir the flour in the canister to loosen it, ensuring you don’t accidentally scoop more than required.
- Leavening - Both baking powder and baking soda add the necessary lift in the avocado waffles.
- Sugar - Just 1 tablespoon of sugar helps to balance the slight bitterness found in avocado.
- Chocolate chips - As in all my chocolate chip recipes, I prefer to use Ghirdaelli semi sweet chocolate chips.
How to make?
You can find full printable recipe below, but here is a quick overview of the procedure along with step-by-step photos.
Step 9 - Preheat waffle iron according to manufactures instructions. Ladle about ⅓ cup of avocado waffles batter into each square and cook for 5 to 6 minutes per batch.
How to serve?
These avocado waffles have a crisp exterior but tend to soften upon cooling, so it is best to serve them hot with some maple syrup.
If you need to serve the waffles later, place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet and keep them in a 200°F oven until you're ready to serve. The wire rack allows air to circulate around the waffles, helping them stay crispy.
Storage and Reheating
The best way to store leftover avocado waffles is in the freezer. Once cooled, place them in zipper bags and freeze for up to 2 months. When you're ready to enjoy them, simply toast one or two frozen waffles in a toaster until heated through.
Helpful tips
- Mash avocado until very smooth and lump free.
- Make sure the waffle iron is pre heated before pouring the batter.
- Grease the waffle iron. This ensures that the waffles does not stick to the iron. I like to spray mine with non-stick cooking spray.
- You can omit the chocolate chips if you prefer, but I highly recommend including them. The blend of avocado and chocolate is truly irresistible.
