Pro tips:

Skillet – A good cast iron skillet maintains the heat and gives the bread a wonderful crust. However, a non-stick skillet will work just as fine.

Temperature – High heat will make the bread brown fast without melting the cheese fully, whereas very low heat might take forever. So, moderately hot heat is perfect for making the ultimate garlic bread grilled cheese recipe.

Cheese – This recipe has been tested with various cheese/cheese combinations – mozzarella & cheddar / cheddar / mozzarella & parmesan / cheddar and Monterey jack. We found that just mozzarella paired extremely well with the garlic butter toasted bread. However, you could experiment with the above mentioned cheeses.

Weigh it down – This step is optional, but placing a heavy pan on top of the grilled cheese sandwich while cooking, ensures-

  • a beautiful, even crust
  • helps in making the bread crispy
  • Melts cheese uniformly

Garlic – We use LOTS of fresh garlic and garlic powder to amp up the garlic flavor. Can never go wrong with too much garlic, right?

Butter – Room temperature butter helps to mix everything well and makes it easier to spread.

Salted or unsalted butter? – Anything works. If using salted, then make sure to reduce salt.

Salt – Grilled cheese garlic bread tastes best when it is a touch salty. But, season according to your taste.
