👉 This instant pot alfredo pasta recipe was originally shared in 2018 with chicken. Since then, it’s been updated to a simple version without chicken, and refreshed with new photos and step-by-step instructions in January 2025.

Similar to the one pot alfredo, this restaurant-quality meal is perfect for any day of the week! While this is a vegetarian version of alfredo pasta, it’s super easy to customize with chicken or broccoli. Plus, it's a simple dump-and-go recipe that makes dinner a breeze!

    Ingredients you'll need

    • Linguini: While alfredo is traditionally made with fettuccine, I prefer linguine for this alfredo pasta recipe. It cooks slightly softer in the pressure cooker, creating a luscious, creamy sauce. That said, feel free to swap in fettuccine if you prefer!
    • Broth: As always, I prefer using 33% reduced-sodium broth to better control the salt, but you can easily swap it for vegetable stock or even water if you prefer.
    • Garlic: You’ll need 1 to 2 cloves of minced garlic, but feel free to use garlic powder or skip it altogether. Love garlic? Check out our roundup of 17 must-try recipes for garlic lovers!
    • Heavy cream: This is an indulgent dish, so there's no substitute for heavy cream. Using milk or half-and-half may cause the sauce to curdle.
    • Parmesan cheese: As I mention in the parmesan cheese recipes, use freshly grated parmesan for a flavor that canned cheese can't match.

    Variations

Chicken - Place chicken tenders or sliced chicken breasts on top of the linguine.

Shrimp - Refer to our instant pot shrimp alfredo for a detailed recipe.

Fettuccini - Swap the linguine for 8 ounces of fettuccine noodles. Fettuccine will be slightly firmer than linguine, adding a bit more texture to the dish.

👩‍🍳 Before serving: Alfredo pasta may thicken slightly as it sits. Simply stir in a splash of hot water to loosen it up before serving!

👉 How to store: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The sauce may thicken after chilling, but simply add a splash of milk or water when reheating. I recommend using the microwave for quick and easy reheating.

    Equipment

    • instant pot

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups chicken stock I used 33% reduced sodium
    • 2 cloves garlic finely chopped
    • ½ teaspoon salt adjust based on the stock used
    • ¼ teaspoon pepper
    • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
    • 8 ounces linguini broken in half
    • ¾ cup grated parmesan
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • Add the stock, garlic, salt and pepper in the inner pot of the instant pot.
    • Gently pour the heavy cream on top, but don't stir.
    • Layer the broken linguini noodles on top, crisscrossing the direction of the noodles for each layer. This will help prevent the noodles from sticking together.
    • Close the lid, be sure the vent knob is sealed. Set to cook on high pressure for 6 minutes.
    • Once the cooking time is complete, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. Afterward, carefully release any remaining pressure.
    • Open the instant pot, stir in the parmesan and mix well to combine. Don't worry if there’s extra liquid—the noodles will absorb it as they sit.
    • Serve after few minutes with with additional parmesan cheese if desired.

    Notes

    Garlic is optional.
Feel free to use vegetable stock or even water instead of chicken stock. Be sure to adjust salt accordingly.
Use fettuccini noodles instead of linguini.

My folks bought me a pressure cooker for my birthday, and it's amazing! I usually use it to cook soup and chicken pieces, so will have to try a pasta dish soon 🙂 The perfect excuse to make this recipe!

      Hi Maria,

2 questions: 1) Any adjustments needed if using a 6qt Instant Pot?
      2) Could shrimp be substituted for chicken in this recipe, and if so, would the cook time need to be adjusted? I made your shrimp pasta in tomato cream sauce last week and it was DELICIOUS (first time using my Instant Pot- total success) so I have shrimp on my mind again. Thanks so much!
