This Chocolate Hummus Recipe combines just 4 wholesome ingredients, using dates to naturally sweeten. It is a thick, creamy chickpea chocolate spread that's perfect as a guilt-free sweet dip. It's so delicious you might just want to enjoy it straight from the spoon!
Chocolate hummus is a decadent twist on classic hummus, transforming it into a sweet dip perfect for dessert. Unlike traditional savory hummus, this version swaps out the usual savory ingredients for sweet ones, resulting in a smooth, creamy texture reminiscent of chocolate mousse.
It's ideal as a fruit dip and pairs wonderfully with pretzels, apple slices, strawberries, pineapple, or our favorite—cinnamon sugar pita chips.
Several popular brands have embraced the dessert hummus trend, offering various flavors such as vanilla bean, sea salt caramel, cake batter, pumpkin spice, peanut butter, and dark chocolate.
However, I wanted to bake a chocolate hummus that is wholesome, healthy yet feels indugent, like the no bake brownie bites. This chickpea chocolate spread makes ideal no bake snacks or healthy after school snack for kids.
If you are a hummus lover, then you will love out roasted beet hummus that is made using beetroot and is just as healthy as this dark chocolate hummus dip.

- Chickpeas - No need to soak—just open a can of chickpeas, drain, and rinse, just like with any canned chickpea recipe. It’s that simple and convenient!
- Dates - One of the best natural sweetener there is! I have used soft, plump Medjool dates, like in the chocolate salami or in all date recipes.

What to eat with Chocolate Hummus?
This sweet chocolate hummus so good that it is delicious straight from a spoon. It pairs beautifully with a variety of treats:
- Cinnamon sugar pita chips - Cut pita bread into wedges and place on a baking sheet. Spray with a coating non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle a mixture of white sugar and ground cinnamon, then bake at 350 degrees or deep brown in color.
- Fresh fruits - Apples, strawberries, bananas, and pears make for a fresh, fruity contrast to the sweet dark chocolate flavor.
- Pretzels - The salty crunch of pretzels complements the sweet and sweet chocolate hummus perfectly.
- Graham crackers - The subtle sweetness pairs well dessert hummus.
- Dried fruits - Dried apricots, banana chips or freeze dried apples are all tasty options.
- Toasted bread - Try spreading it on your morning toast instead of jam or Nutella.
- Banana - Split a whole banana in half and spread the chocolate hummus on the cut side to make a healthy snack for kids after school.
Recipe tips
- Grind until very smooth for an ultra creamy texture.
- Dates - I use soft Medjool dates which grinds very easily in the food processor.
- Noor dates - If you are using the Noor variety, then I recommend soaking them in warm water for about 30 minutes before adding into the processor. Adjust water accordingly.
- Sweetness - If you like your chocolate hummus on the sweeter side then add a dash of maple syrup to sweeten.
- Add enough water to get a super smooth and creamy consistency, but still maintain it thick enough to be able to scoop.
- Mixer - A food processor or Vitamix are great options.
How to store?
Chocolate hummus stays fresh for up to a week when stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, making it a convenient and healthy snack option throughout the week. For longer storage, you can freeze it for up to a month. Just thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
