Black Forest Mug Cake

All the flavors of traditional black forest cake made easy, super easy in your microwave in under 2 minutes. This recipe is a fraction of effort and time of the traditional dessert, which includes layered chocolate sponges, brushed a cherry syrup and layered with more chopped fruits and sweetened whipped cream. One of my favorite birthday cakes every year!

My favorite part is that it is not overly sweet when compared to many frosted or layered desserts. We adapted this Pioneer woman’s chocolate mug cake, and slightly modified it to make into a black forest cake in a mug. You know it is gonna be good!

Why do I love this recipe?

  2. Uses fresh cherries
  3. Stir and cook

Cooking Time

The time can vary with different microwaves and also with different cup sizes. Cook in microwave for one minute and 45 seconds (longer might make the cake dry) for a standard coffee mug and one minute and 40 seconds for a wider mug.

Pro Tips for Success:

Mug – A standard size microwave coffee mug works for this recipe. Please do not choose a smaller one.

Time

  • If you use a wider mug, then remove about 10-15 seconds before.
  • Remove promptly from the microwave. DO NOT COOK LONGER, It will make it dry.

Cherry liquor (Kirsch) – It adds the authentic black forest cake taste, but if you don’t have cherry liquor around, then vanilla extract works well.

Cherries – Bing cherries give the traditional flavor. Other varieties are not recommended for this dessert.

Stir batter until lump free – Using a spoon, stir the batter until smooth and no lumps remain.

Topping ideas

We love to top with chopped fresh cherries and sweetened whipped cream for an authentic taste. Other delicious topping ideas include-

  1. Vanilla ice cream
  2. Sweetened greek yogurt
  3. Fresh raspberries or strawberries
  4. Banana slices
  5. Chocolate syrup
  6. Nutella

Stir dry ingredients – Stir flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder and salt in a microwave safe mug.

Finish batter – Stir in milk, vegetable oil, cherry liquor or vanilla extract and stir until smooth. Stir in chopped cherries.

Microwave – Microwave for 1 minute and 45 seconds. The pioneer woman’s recipe suggests 1 minute and 30 seconds, this cake needs few seconds longer due to the addition of cherries.
