Strawberry Lassi

Strawberry lassi is a variation to the hugely popular mango lassi! A trip to an Indian restaurant is never complete without a tall glass of mango lassi. It is sweet and so delicious with ripe mangoes. We have created a fun twist using strawberries instead of mango!

Made with just 5 ingredients, it is made in under 5 minutes, it is perfect as a refreshing drink any time of the day or served as a smoothie on hectic mornings before you run out the door.

This homemade recipe makes just enough for one to two serving —> the perfect portion size for a snack, breakfast, or midday meal. But you can easily double or triple the recipe.

Why This Recipe Works

  1. Right proportions – The proportions of fruit to yogurt in this recipe is just right. So you do not end up tasting only strawberry puree or a sweetened yogurt drink with mild fruity flavor instead of strawberry lassi. The correct balance of these two ingredients makes this a perfect recipe.
  2. Quick and easy – No cooking required and all it takes is a minute in the blender.
  3. Can be made year round – This drink can be made using fresh or frozen strawberries whenever a craving strikes.
  4. Forgiving recipe – Switch up the measurements depending on your taste.

What is lassi?

Lassi is a yogurt-based drink that’s said to have originated in Punjab region. Traditionally, people made lassi by hand-blending homemade yogurt with water and salt. It served as a cooling hydrating drink against the intense summer heat and calming the stomach due to its high probiotic value.

They were traditionally served in a clay cup, called a kulhar and street vendors usually top them with an extra dollop of cream or malai before serving.

Lassis come in various flavors, such as salty, sweet, spices or with fruits and with mango lassi becoming the most favorite. You can also find few unusual varieties like chocolate or caramel lassis in modern days.

What is Strawberry Lassi?

It is made with the lassi base along with fresh strawberries blended along with it. The drink is sweet with a touch of tartness and a hint of cardamom for a traditional Indian twist. The recipe is basically a strawberry yogurt smoothie if you skip the ground cardamom.

Can we use frozen strawberries?

Sure can! Frozen fruits are sometimes not as sweet as the hand picked fresh ones. Hence, it might need additional sugar for sweetness.

How to garnish?

They look more pretty topped with chopped pistachios, chopped sliced almonds, fresh mint leaves, chopped or whole strawberries or fresh cream.

Ingredients

This recipe requires 5 ingredients, and each plays an important part in the flavor and consistency. Here’s what you need to know about them:

  1. Strawberry – Select sweet, ripe fruits that are red all the way through.
  2. Yogurt – Greek yogurt, plain whole milk or low fat yogurt can be used.
  3. Milk – Addibg milk will give a right consistency to this recipe.
  4. Sugar – Traditionally sugar is used to sweeten. However you can use honey or maple syrup too.
  5. Cardamom – This is optional, but is gives an authentic taste.

Pro Tips for Success

Best blenders – A high speed blender like Vitamix or NutriBullet is great for smoothies. We used the large smoothie Nutri bullet jar to make this recipe.

Sweeten to taste – Adjust sugar depending on your taste and sweetness of the berries used. Make sure that your fruit is super ripe for some natural sweetness.

Sugar – Honey, jaggery, maple syrup or agave can be used instead of plain sugar. However, the taste does get altered and it does not taste authentic.

Use sweet ripe strawberries – They will give the best tasting drink.

Make it vegan – Use almond milk yogurt and skip regular milk to make it vegan.

Flavorings

You can choose to make lassi simply without any added flavorings. However a touch of flavorings elevates the drink and makes it taste exotic. Few great flavoring ideas are:

  1. Ground cardamom (as given in the recipe)
  2. Vanilla extract
  3. Rose water
  4. A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  5. Saffron
  6. Kewra water
ingredients needed to make lassi with fruit.
