Dates are one of my favorite natural sweeteners for smoothie recipes because they make them thick, creamy, and subtly caramel-flavored, while adding extra fiber.
This breakfast walnut smoothie is packed with superfood ingredients and naturally sweetened with fruits like bananas and dates, just like our date banana smoothie.
For an extra nutrition boost, I sometimes soak the walnuts and dates in water a few hours—or even the night—before blending. Soaking not only makes them easier to digest but also creates an ultra-creamy, silky drink.

Ingredients
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.
- Walnuts - Use raw walnuts or soaked the night before, if you are planning ahead.
- Banana - As I explain in ripe banana recipes, use a very ripe, heavily speckled banana for an intense fruity flavor and natural sweetness.
- Milk - Whole milk makes the walnut smoothie rich and creamy, like in avocado smoothie recipe or all smoothies without yogurt.
- Cocoa powder - As I explain in the round-up post cocoa powder recipes, it is the resulting powder after removing most of the cocoa butter and therefore has an intense chocolate flavor.
- Dates - I use soft Medjool dates which makes it easier to blend. If your dates are on the drier side or if using Noor variety, then soak the dates in milk for atleast 30 minutes before blending.

Walnut Smoothie
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 Banana (medium to large)
- ½ to ¾ cup walnuts (½ cup for medium sized banana and ¾ cup for a large one)
- 3 to 5 pitted Medjool dates (adjust according to desired sweetness)
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend for at least one minute, or until the smoothie is very smooth and creamy, then serve.
- 👉 Dates can be tough and fibrous, which makes blending into a creamy smoothie tricky. For the best texture, use soft Medjool dates, or soak drier dates in the milk for at least 30 minutes before blending.

How to make walnut smoothie?
You can find the full printable recipe below, but here is a quick overview of the procedure along with step-by-step photos.

1 & 2. Add chopped walnuts, pitted dates, cocoa powder, and sliced bananas into the blender.

3. Pour in milk and vanilla extract.

4. Blend until uniformly smooth and creamy.

How to use dates in a smoothie
Dates can be a little stubborn in the blender, sometimes leaving tiny chunks at the bottom of your glass. To get a creamy, smooth texture, I recommend using soft Medjool dates and a high-powered blender. Even Medjool dates can be slightly dry, which makes them harder to blend, so if yours are on the drier side, soak them in milk for about 30 minutes before blending. This not only softens them but also helps release their natural sweetness, giving your smoothie a silky, rich consistency.
