Things you'll need to make a spooky sandwich for Halloween
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.

- Bread: I prefer to use dark rye bread for the dark owl like color. Feel free to use any dark colored bread, like whole wheat or whole grain bread.
- Cheese: Use sliced mozzarella cheese for a contrast in color. Yellow colored cheeses like cheddar or American sliced cheeee might not look appealing.
- Olives - Sliced canned olives for ideal to resemble the owl eyes.
Tools you'll need

- Round cutters - You will need three round cookie cutters of different sizes. I used 2 ½-inch, 1 ¼-inch and ¾-inch. I used cookie cutters and the back of pastry tips.
- Toothpicks - Just one toothpick broken in half to help the wings stay in place when cooking.
How to make Halloween Grilled Cheese Sandwich (step-by-step photos)?
You can find full printable recipe below, but here is a quick overview of the procedure along with step-by-step photos.

1 to 4. Place one slice of rye bread on a cutting board, and using the 2 ½ inch cutter, cut out two overlapping circles to create the owl face.
Tip: You will be left with one full circle and one crescent shape.

5. Cut two smaller circles for eyes from the two large overlapping circles.
6. Cut two wing shapes from the crescent shape.
7 & 8. Using the 2 ½ inch cutter, cut a nose from the large full circle.

9. Cut two round eyes from a sliced mozzarella from the ¾-inch cutter, like in Halloween pop tarts.

10. To assemble, place double layer of cheese on one slice of rye bread (cut to fit the bread).
11. Place the cut face on top.
12. Place the nose in the centre.
13. Place two eyes on either side of the nose.

14 & 15. Place the mozzarella circles on top of the eyes and then top with a sliced olive to make pupils.
16. Wings - Place a tiny piece of cheese on either side of the face and place the wings on top.
Tip: The wings will adhere to the face when the cheese melts upon cooking.
17. Break one toothpick in half and insert on each wing, pressing into the sandwich. This helps the wings hold in place and easier to transfer to the pan. Remove the toothpick before serving.

18 & 19. Cook Halloween sandwich - Preheat a skillet over medium heat. When moderately hot, add ½ tablespoon of butter and carefully transfer the assembled Halloween sandwich holding both sides into the skillet. Cover skillet with a lid and cook until cheese melts.
Pro tip: Adjust heat between medium and low to ensure the bottom does not burn.

Recipe tips
- Bread - I like to use dark rye bread slices for the color and shape.
- Cheese - Use a white colored cheese such as mozzarella, Monterey jack or Swiss cheese for the best look.
- Cook only one side - Unlike regular grilled cheese sandwiches that are cooked on both sides, this Halloween sandwich is cooked only on one side to maintain the look.
