    Halloween Sandwich

How fun is this grilled cheese sandwich? Adorably spooky for the kiddos. It's basically a grilled cheese but with Halloween twist. We used dark rye bread to give a spooky owl color and and white mozzarella for contrast. Unlike other grilled cheese recipes, these are cooked only on one side.

    Why You'll like this?

    1. Fun to make - This a fun Halloween project to make with the kids or make one and surprise them for school lunch.

    2. No fancy materials needed - Unlike most Halloween recipes that need special materials, this sandwich is made with basic round cookie cutters.

    3. Customizable with you favorite fillings - We have stopped with a basic bread and cheese. You can totally use your favorite bread, cheeses and fillings to make them your own.

    4. Kid friendly - Your kids will totally fall in love with these.

    What You'll Need?

    • Bread: We used Rye due to the almost black color like an owl. If you cannot find Rye then use any dark colored bread.
    • Cheese: Choose a contrasting white colored mozzarella cheese. You might want to stay away from yellowish cheese like cheddar / American.
    • Filling: We didn't use any.

What size cookie cutter I'll need?

We will need three round cookie cutters of different sizes, that are proportionate to the size of bread that you use.

We have used 2 ½-inch, 1 ¼-inch and ¾-inch (If you notice, I've used a pastry tip for the smallest size. So, use whatever you can find around the home).

    HOW TO MAKE?

This recipe might look complicated, but we have included detailed step-by-step photos for you to follow along.

    1. Place cheese - Place 2 slices of mozzarella on one slice (we are going with double slice, since it gives a more prominent whitish color. Cut cheese to fit.
    2. Make eyes - Using the largest cutter, cut one circle (off-centered)  from the bread slice with no cheese. Using the same cutter, cut another overlapping circle to get piece-1 and piece-2. Place the bread slice over the cheese.
    3. Cut nose and wings - Using the middle cookie cutter, cut one circle (off-centered like this)  from each piece_1 and piece_2 and place over the cheese. Using the largest cutter, cut one piece (to get three pieces) from piece_1, to make the nose and wings.
    4. Make pupil of the eye - Fold the remaining cheese slice in half. Using the smallest cutter, cut 2 circles and place over eyes. Place two slice of olives for pupil.
    5. Finish construction - Place nose in between the eyes (you might have to snug it in). Cut two small pieces of cheese and place on either side of the face (this will work as a glue to hold the wing in place. So, let this piece be smaller than the wings). Place two wings over the cheese and secure with toothpicks ( I broke one toothpick in half and used to secure each wing). We will remove the toothpicks before serving.
    6. Cook - Add some butter into a medium non-stick pan and place over medium heat. Hold the sandwich on both sides and gently place in the hot pan, cover with a lid and cook for about 3 minutes, until cheese begins to melt. (The sandwich will be cooked only on one side for the looks).

    Ingredients

    • 2 slices Rye bread (or any dark colored bread)
    • 3 slices mozzarella cheese
    • 2 slices olive
    • 1 teaspoon butter, for cooking

    Materials required

    • 3 circle cookie cutters ( 2 ½-inch, 1 ¼-inch, ¾-inch)
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • (Use the pictures above as a guide)
Place cheese - Place 2 slices of mozzarella on one slice (we are going with double slice, since it gives a more prominent whitish color. Cut cheese to fit.
Make eyes - Using the largest cutter, cut one circle (off-centered)  from the bread slice with no cheese. Using the same cutter, cut another overlapping circle to get piece-1 and piece-2. Place the bread slice over the cheese.
Cut nose and wings - Using the middle cookie cutter, cut one circle (off-centered like this)  from each piece-1 and piece-2 and place over the cheese. Using the largest cutter, cut one piece (to get three pieces) from piece_1, to make the nose and wings.
Make pupil of the eye - Fold the remaining cheese slice in half. Using the smallest cutter, cut 2 circles and place over eyes. Place two slice of olives for pupil.
Cook - Add some butter into a medium non-stick pan and place over medium heat. Hold the sandwich on both sides and gently place in the hot pan, cover with a lid and cook for about 3 minutes, until cheese begins to melt. (The sandwich will be cooked only on one side for the looks).
Make sure that the heat is low enough so that the sandwich does not burn in the bottom. Remove both toothpicks before serving.

    Notes

My choice of bread was rye, due to the dark color. But, you can use any dark colored bread.
Use any three round cutters that you have around that will proportionate to the bread. If you’ve noticed, I have used a piping tip for the smallest size.
Tip – Rectangular slice of bread makes a much better looking owl face than a square one.
