These Avocado Truffles are rich, chocolatey, and secretly healthier!
Made with mashed avocado instead of heavy cream, they’re silky smooth, naturally decadent, and super easy to make. No one will ever guess they’re made with avocado!

Homemade chocolate truffles are typically made with a rich chocolate ganache — a simple mix of dark chocolate, heavy cream, and a touch of butter. The result? A decadent, indulgent treat that’s especially perfect for Christmas.
But what happens if you swap the heavy cream for mashed avocado? Surprisingly, avocado brings the same creamy texture, richness, and buttery mouthfeel — so the balls still turn out smooth and luscious.
Does avocado change the taste of chocolate truffles? Just a little. To balance that subtle avocado taste, I add a bit of cocoa powder to the mix — and honestly, it’s a game changer. It deepens the chocolate flavor, completely masks the avocado, and helps the truffles set beautifully. Win-win!

Ingredients you'll need
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.
- Avocado: Choose a ripe avocado with vibrant green flesh and no dark spots, as any bruising can add a bitter taste and affect the flavor of the chocolate balls; you'll need one large avocado for this recipe.
- Chocolate: Use high-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips for the best flavor—I used one 12-ounce bag of Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips for a rich, smooth result.
- Coconut Oil: Coconut oil adds healthy fats and helps with texture, but if you’re not a fan of the coconut oil, you can easily substitute with unsalted butter or ghee.
- Cocoa Powder: Adding 2 tablespoons of dark cocoa powder not only enhances the chocolate flavor but also helps completely mask any hint of avocado taste.

Avocado Truffles
Ingredients
- 12 ounces semi sweet chocolate chips I like to use Ghiradelli
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter
- 1 large ripe avocado (¾ cup mashed)
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- cocoa powder or minced pistachios for coating
Instructions
- Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, for 2 to 3 minutes or until fully melted and smooth.
- Mash the avocado really well until it’s smooth and lump-free.
- Add the mashed avocado, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt to the melted chocolate and mix until well combined.
- Let the mixture sit at room temperature until it’s firm enough to roll into balls. In a hurry? Pop it in the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes to speed things up.
- Scoop the mixture into 1 tablespoon-sized mounds. Roll each into balls.
- Scoop mixture into a tablespoon measure balls, gently roll between the palm of your hands until smooth and round.
- Roll each into toppings, if desired. Place them on a sheet pan and chill until firm. After the truffles are firm, you can transfer them to an airtight container.
- Store the truffles in the refrigerator, and let them sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving — they taste best when slightly softened.

What to coat avocado truffles in?
You can stick with the classic cocoa powder for a traditional, rustic finish — it's simple and lets the rich chocolate shine.
For extra texture and flavor, try rolling them in finely chopped nuts or shredded coconut.
I went with chopped pistachios, which not only complement the green hue of the avocado but also give a subtle nod to everyone's favorite Dubai-style pistachio chocolate bar. It's a delicious match!

How long will it last?
Store the truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they'll stay fresh for up to 1 week. For the best texture, let them sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving — the chocolate softens slightly, making each bite silky smooth.
If you’d like to make them ahead for the holidays (like Christmas!), you can freeze them for up to a month. Just thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying.
Success Tips
- Mash the avocado until completely smooth — no lumps! This ensures a silky texture in every bite.
- Swap coconut oil with butter if you prefer a richer taste.
- Use vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips to make vegan chocolate truffles.
- Choose high-quality chocolate like Ghirardelli or Guittard for the best flavor and texture.

Just making these now! One thing I would say is to make sure your avocado is at room temperature or slightly warmed up in the microwave for a few secs before adding to the chocolate - mine was too cold and the chocolate seized - I managed to save it by microwaving the mixture so it was all good in the end!

Hi Fiona, Thank you for the tip, we have included it in the recipe notes so that it might be helpful to our readers. Cold avocado should generally not be a problem since the melted chocolate is much warmer. Have a wonderful Holiday season - Maria
