These Chocolate Truffles with Condensed Milk are made with only 3 ingredients! They are lusciously creamy, rich, and just melts in your mouth. No refrigeration is needed.
What are chocolate truffles? They are luxurious, bite-sized confections made primarily from chocolate and cream. They're known for their rich, creamy texture, making them a popular treat for special occasions and the holidays.
They are often rolled in cocoa powder and resemble the edible truffle fungus, hence their name. Like more truffles? Try our almond butter truffles or avocado truffles.
Several online recipes for chocolate truffles with condensed milk use cocoa powder and condensed milk. While this creates creamy and decadent truffles, the addition of melted chocolate was a game-changer. It provides the truffles with a much smoother consistency and makes the dough easy to work with, eliminating stickiness.

Why are these best?
- Using only 3 ingredients.
- Make it in the microwave or stovetop
- No heavy cream, cocoa powder or cream cheese.
- Quick and easy recipe.
- Ultra smooth and luxurious texture!
Ingredients
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.
- Chocolate - The quality of the chocolate significantly impacts the final confection. As for the recipes using chocolate chips, use a premium chocolate such as Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate bars for the best tasting chocolate truffles with condensed milk.
- Sweetened condensed milk - Half a cup of condensed milk makes it sweet and a creamy texture.
- Cocoa powder - As in date balls, I like to use dutch processed cocoa powder. It is sweeter and less astringent when compared to natural variety.
Best chocolate for truffles - Use a high-quality chocolate such as Ghirardelli or Guittard to make it outrageously delicious. I prefer semi-sweet or dark chocolate for an exceptionally rich candy. Milk chocolate might not work because it can result in an overly sweet mixture when paired with sweetened condensed milk.
Variations
- Skip vanilla extract and use almond or coconut extract.
- Spike the ganache with a little alcohol, like Chambord, whiskey or rum.
- Mix in a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper powder for some heat.

3 & 4. Stir in cocoa powder, vanilla extract and salt, until thoroughly combined. Set aside at room temperature for 1 to 4 hours, or until it becomes a soft dough consistency.
Tip: The mixture will solidify in approximately one hour during cold winter days, but may require more time on a hot summer day.
5. Scoop up a tablespoon measure, roll it into smooth balls, and then immediately roll it in cocoa powder while the outside is still sticky.
Topping ideas
- Cocoa powder - Dutch process or unsweetened cocoa powder
- Chopped nuts - Finely minced nuts such as walnuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts or peanuts add texture and flavor.
- Coconut - Roll chocolate truffles with condensed milk in sweetened or unsweetened shredded coconut.
- Sprinkles - Use colorful sprinkles or edible glitter to suit your celebration.
- Freeze-dried fruit powder: Powdered freeze-dried fruits like raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries offer a tangy and colorful coating.
- Crushed cookies or biscuits: Roll the chocolate truffles with condensed milk in crushed Oreos, graham crackers, or digestive biscuits.
Pro tip: If the rolled balls seem too dry to adhere toppings, gently roll them again between your hands, applying slight pressure. The warmth from your hands will restore their stickiness, allowing toppings to adhere easily.
How to store?
Since these chocolate truffles are made without any cream, they will last at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 4 days. However, if you wish to store them longer, then refrigerate in a sealed container for up to a month. Bring to room temperature before serving.
To freeze - Store the chocolate truffles in the freezer for up to 3 months. For optimal texture and flavor, allow them to come to room temperature before serving.
Package for gift giving - Pack the chocolate truffles with condensed milk in small decorative candy boxes with tissue paper, tie them with ribbons, or pack them in little cellophane bags.
Helpful tips
- After shaping the balls, promptly roll them in cocoa powder. The truffle's surface will retain slight stickiness and warmth from your hands, ensuring excellent adherence of the toppings.
- The resting time varies based on weather conditions. In colder winter months, the dough typically firms up within an hour, whereas on a hot summer day, it may take over three hours or longer.

Can these be coated in melted chocolate or will they melt? My plan was to roll the chilled chocolate mass into ball, freeze them, then dip them in melted chocolate and re-freeze them.
Thoughts?
Maria Doss
Hi Monica, These are much more sturdier than normal truffles (made with melted chocolate and cream). Refrigerate rolled balls for several hours, dip in melted chocolate and then chill again. Freezing is not necessary. Hope it helps, happy holidays:)
Ashlyn
These are so good! I had half of a can of sweetened condensed milk to use up and this was the perfect way to do that! I will make these again!
Maria Doss
Hi Ashlyn, Glad you liked it, Maria
Isabel
I want to try this! Can I rest the dough in the fridge instead? so it sets faster, thanks!
Maria Doss
Hi Isabel, Absolutely!! We would recommend stirring every 10 to 15 minutes to make sure it firms up uniformly, Maria

Can brandy be substituted or in addition to vanilla?
Maria Doss
Hi Mary,
If you like Brandy, then feel fry to substitute instead of vanilla - Maria

Can I substitute fresh squeezed orange juice for the vanilla?
Maria Doss
If you are looking for orange flavored truffles, then we will suggest using 1/2 to 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest instead. Orange juice will tend to dilute the mixture and not let them firm up. Hope it helps - Maria

Can I use Bakers chocolate square instead of cocoa?
Maria Doss
Hi Helen, Baker's, Semi Sweet Baking Chocolate Squares should work instead of the semi sweet chocolate chips - Maria
Pri
Hi!
I love your recipe and have used it multiple times to make hazelnut truffles.
This time I want to set it in a tin and cut into squares, what size baking tin would you recommend?
My second question is how to edit the recipe to add alcohol.
Maria Doss
Hi Pri, Glad you love this recipe. You could try a parchment lined standard loaf pan (8 X 4 inch) for this recipe. If you like to add alcohol, then skip vanilla extract and and use up to 1 tablespoon of your favorite alcohol. Hope it helps - Maria
